WEBINAR SERIES ON PREPARING JWST PROPOSALS

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has re-opened its first “General Observer” (GO) call for proposals. It’s time for you to think about writing a JWST proposal. The proposal deadline is May 1 2020.

We will give webinars and organize workshops in Canada in the winter of 2020 to help canadian astronomers prepare JWST time proposals. Our January 30 2020 webinar is a general overview of the observatory and tools necessary for proposal preparation and submission. The slides can be found here while the live webinar is posted on Youtube.

Two 1-day workshops are upcoming. One organized by the University of Western Ontario on March 12 2020, one organized by the Université de Montréal, on March 18 2020. Please consider attending one of these if you are serious about submitting a JWST proposal in Cycle 1. We will give two additional webinars closer to the submission deadline to answer pressing questions and help with specific details, on April 14 2020 and April 22 2020. More details will posted later, here.

In 2017/2018 the NIRISS Instrument Team gave a series of webinar to help the canadian community prepare time proposals. Our series of webinars is available on Youtube. We invited Canadian astronomers (students, postdocs and professors) to attend a series of webinars to help then prepare a JWST proposal. We taught you via demos how to use the available tools and documentation. A series of 8 webinars were given, on Wednesdays 4pm eastern time, between November 15 2017 and February 7 2018. The webinars lasted 1 hour each. They were recorded and posted online here and also on Youtube, here

The first two webinars are introductory presentations on JWST’s capabilities and its main proposal tools. Webinars 3 to 8 are meant to provide detailed demos of specific observing modes (imaging, multi-object spectroscopy, etc) based on a notional science case.

The webinars were presented by Rene Doyon (UdeM), Chris Willott (NRC-HAA), Julien Rameau (UdeM) and Loic Albert (UdeM). Any question with this series of webinars or with JWST can be addressed to jwsthelp@listes.umontreal.ca .
